It is not the best movie I have ever seen, but A Monster Calls is definitely a flick very well made. I was happy to see it in the Sneak Preview, even though I did not cry and even though I thought it was a bit too slow. What I like about the movie is that it is very believable, even though it is fantasy. It is beautiful how this boy learns things through creativity.
I was not super impressed by the role of one of the most awesome actresses of all time: Sigourney Weaver. She plays a difficult part as well, cause she is simply not easy to love. She is a bit like the horrible stepmom, but that is only because we see her through the eyes of the little boy. SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT! What I did find a bit odd, is that it is obvious that the tree is the grandfather, you see the man behind his voice, Liam Neeson, in a few family photos, but then the movie does not really connect the dot. On the one hand that helps making grandma look like a stronger woman, and the movie does need a strong woman, but on the other, it is a bit weird that you see something happening, but it does not get addressed.
It is too bad the movie is a bit scary for young people, cause this would be an amazing film to show children that struggle with parents that are ill. It is very obvious that it is based on a novel, and that novel is probably amazing too. A Monster Calls is a very lovely flick, well done J.A. Bayona (The Impossible).
