So ever since I watched Everything is Copy, the documentary about the amazing Nora Ephron, I keep being obsessed with her. I still want to get that tattoo, I read one of her books on my tablet, and I try to watch all her movies. When Harry Met Sally is one of those, and I just watched it and it was so amazing. So much of the dialogue is so witty and so true, and it is such an amazing story about people keeping on turning up in each others lives. Everybody has someone like that, or maybe even multiple people.
What I love about When Harry Met Sally is that it is still so relevant after decades! Obviously you can see it is an older movie, but the story and the themes are still so relevant. And Meg Ryan is so adorable in this movie, I don’t get how not every guy at the parties she goes to in this movie does not fall in love with her instantly. And every woman, for that matter. I love the scene in which she has a total breakdown and then that thing between them happens. I love that moment on New Year’s Eve when he tells her about all those adorable things he so adorably remembers about her, and loves about her.
It is a truly romantic movie, and I am such a sucker for it! I don’t even like Billy Chrystal, and especially in the beginning I thought Harry was such a douche, but at the end I was totally like: Aaww he is perfect in his own imperfect way, I love it. And then there’s all those old people in between, telling us about their love, being even more adorable.. For the local newspaper I used to have to go to people that were married for 60 years, and even though my colleagues always thought it was so dull to do, I was thrilled everytime. I have so much respect for people that know how to share their lives together, and often they would tell the cutest stories.
And the true advice they gave was always: live and let live, or: you have to be able to give, and not just take. Really true things, that people my age do not really handle very well. It is just lovely to listen to stories about people falling in love, even if it is super tacky. When Harry Met Sally is exactly that, but in a very cool movie way with AMAZING dialogues by Nora Ephron. I love it, When Harry Met Sally truly made me super happy after a bad day. I might even buy it on Blu-Ray!
I love When Harry Met Sally… too, and every time I watch it I wonder why is it so difficult to find an intelligent romantic comedy these days?
When Harry Met Sally… makes it look so easy. Nora Ephron’s sharp script is the biggest highlight, but Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have terrific chemistry. Crystal’s deadpan wit and Ryan’s bubbly personality play off each other wonderfully, and their gradually progressing relationship is entirely convincing. It all seems to happen so naturally.
This was also the film where I first fell in love With Meg Ryan. I actually watched it on a date once, and couldn’t help moaning and gasping whenever Meg would do something… roll her eyes, deliver a line, laugh… my date continually elbowed me in the ribs and got very agitated. No second date for us, but my love for Meg Ryan movies endures to this day!
